Kenwood honors her Veterans
|
On Tuesday, November 12, Kenwood High School showed their respect to the school and community’s veterans by having an special assembly in their honor.
Veterans’ Day is a public holiday in the United States to honor military veterans. A veteran is any person who served in the United States Armed Forces at anytime. The assembly started with the JROTC color guard presenting the American Flag and the singing of the national anthem by the Kenwood High mixed choir followed by a moment of silence. To honor all the Armed Forces, the US Coast Guard, US Navy, US Army, US Air Force and the Marine Corps Flags were presented and the official song of each branch were played by the Kenwood High band. Veterans who are now apart of the Kenwood High faculty and staff were honored. Each one was called to the floor and presented with a flower and a certificate of thanks. The Unarmed Step Team added some excitement to the assembly by showing off a routine in honor of the Veterans, which they will also use parts of for competition. To conclude the assembly, America’s White Table was presented. The table, is a symbol for soldiers who are Prisoners of War or Missing in Action. A small table was used “to show one soldier’s lonely battle”. It was set with a white tablecloth, for the soldier’s pure heart. A lemon slice and grains of salt represents the soldiers bitter fate, and tears of their families. An empty chair represents the missing soldiers. A black napkin represents the sorrow of captivity, a white candle for peace, and a red rose for hope of the return of the soldiers. |

Veterans' Parade

Every holiday related to the military little American flags pop up in Patriot Park to represent the soldiers for Ft. Campbell who have passed. Patriot Park is a small park in the middle of 41-A between Fort Campbell’s gates 2 and 3. This Veterans’ Day there were over 600 flags flying in the ground at Patriot Park. Council Women Deanna McLaughlin and Combat Vets Motorcycle Association (CVMA) chapter 18-2 began putting out the flags five years ago. “It started July 4, 2011 as a show of patriotism,” McLaughlin said. They started with only a few rows there are now up to thirty-two rows. As of this Veterans day there are a total of 653 flags. Clarksville was named in the top ten most patriotic cities in the United States, thanks to displays like the one in Patriot Park. |

The Veterans parade was held on November 7th in downtown Clarksville. Its school band and JROTC class represented all schools in the county. The parade was organized from the oldest program to newest. For aesthetics the cadets were organized by height as opposed to rank. Because of the varying levels of cadets they marched in cadence to help stay in step. This helped the freshman cadets, as it was their first experience marching in the parade. “It was fun, but got a little hot in the all weather jacket.” The parade was a proud moment for every one in attendance whether in the parade or not. “Its important to me because he vets are people who have volunteered to ensure I have a future,” said Sean Meier. Everyone there was there to support and show respect to veterans who served and are currently serving our country. “I felt it would be an honor because they see respect from the younger generations,” said Meier. |
Teens and Drug use: Be aware of the facts.
There are many teens that are putting their life on the line daily through drug use. They are at risk because using strong drugs can cause health issues and make them engage in more risky behaviors. There are harmful ingredients in drugs that may cause a severe physical impact on your body.
Drug use is a very common problem in the United States. According to www.drugabuse.gov, Marijuana is the most popular drug used by teens .
Marijuana can cause you to do abnormal things such as stealing, displaying acts of violence, vandalizing others things or ones you own as well.
According to www.drugfreeworld.org, Marijuana is often more potent than it used to be, which means the seed is a lot stronger. This has caused a lot of teens teenage smokers to take a trip to the emergency room.
The use of Marijuana can lead to users engaging in heavier drugs, such as Heroin, Cocaine, Crack Cocaine, Crystal Meth, and other Methamphetamines. Drug addicts tend to do harder drugs because once they use a certain drug long enough, they will feel as if it doesn’t work for them anymore.
Marijuana can affect you in many ways. It can affect your seeing, hearing and sleeping schedule. The long-term affect of Marijuana is that it can cause you to have lung and heart problems, which can lead to coughing and wheezing and worsens the symptoms of bronchitis.
Marijuana can be addictive to users, but Marijuana is different from other drugs as the addiction is more driven by user preference as opposed to physical addiction. Still, it is very dangerous for anyone to use.

As Homecoming draws closer, there are many different feelings expressed by the students and faculty of a school. Some of the student body is rushing to get ready for homcoming, while other students are dreading spirit week. Garrett Whited believes that the tradition of homecoming is a complete waste of time. “Kids should not focused on trying to be better than one another,” said Garrett. “Why go to a stupid dance when I could be studying?” Senior Alexander Lee has a completely different feeling on the subject. “It’s pretty cool, I like it. It brings people together,” said Lee. Alex is excited for those who are planning on going to homecoming, but he is unable to attend due to his team doing things for fundraising. Then there are some students, who don’t have as strong a feeling on the subject. Abbigal Austin thinks the tradition of homecoming is just okay. She is excited for homecoming because she gets to see people and dance. She believes the theme of Under The Sea is pretty cool. For students that have strong feelings about what they would like to see at homecoming, SGA elections are in the spring and help is always welcomed during homecoming season. |
Homecoming overview by Devonta
Every year, in the fall, we celebrate an entire week of being a Knight at Kenwood High. This year the theme is a Knight Under the Sea. “We choose the homecoming theme from the top 5 themes voted by SGA officers and representatives,” said Adria. Knight Under the Sea has been in the running for the last few years and finally garnered enough votes to be the theme this year, according to Mrs. Jamie Wright, SGA sponsor. “There will be activities through the week such as the spirit days, the bonfire and the game and then the dance,” said Mrs. Wright The spirit days are spread out through the week, and the Bonfire will be held Tuesday evening behind the school. The Bonfire will have games, a large fire and other spirit related activities. Admission is free, but games and food will cost varying amounts with most being around $1. The activities are used as fundraisers for different clubs around the school. Friday is the biggest day of the week with the Pep Rally during school, followed in the evening by the Homecoming football game, sweetheart and court presentation and the dance. “The dance will be five dollars,” said Mrs. Wright, regarding admission cost to the dance. The dance is a semi formal event. The student dress code for the dance is no clothing with holes in it, girls may not wear strapless dresses and boys should wear their shirts tucked in. Any student can come in wearing appropriate spirit wear should they decide not to dress in semi formal attire. Student often disliked the music but this may not be the case this year. “They will be playing popular music that is out this year for homecoming,” Adria said. |
